The Salt Flat Arrow is located along Highway 62 out in the middle of the West Texas desert, behind the Salt Flat Café.
The café itself was established in 1929. After a long drive across the desert, it was nice to relax inside with a hot cup of coffee. The owner of the café also owns the surrounding land, including where the arrow is located. We explained about our arrow quest, and she was more than willing to show me where the arrow is located. She told us that she doesn’t have any problem with people coming out to see the arrow, and long as they ask for permission first. The cafe opens for breakfast and closes by 1:00, so make sure to get here before that if you want to see this arrow. If you tresspass you may get arrested.
All that remains of the arrow is the base where the beacon once stood and the arrow itself, both of which are in very good condition.
The portion that is still there is 33 feet in length.
The pilot would approach the tail of the arrow on a compass heading of 95° (E), and then exit the arrow on a compass heading of 86°, also basically East.
(All measurements and compass headings are approximate). |
