Arrow and beacon created by Oregon Aviation History Center in 2005. The beacon is authentic but not to this location. During the late 20s-30s Cottage Grove had a conventional airport beacon but by 1942 it no longer shows up on the beacon maps. The beacon in front of our building was originally located at Creswell Butte and was abandoned by the government once the beacons were no longer used. We moved it down here and built a concrete pad with directional arrows on which to place it. The beacon tower is located directly under the Contract Air Mail route that ran between Seattle and San Diego. The tower has been retrofitted to withstand earthquake and wind shear requirements now set by the FAA for such towers. |
